My family is from Dalian - nearly fell off my chair when I started reading this entry. I’ve never seen a restaurant outside of China dedicated to Liaoning cuisine!
This piece made me nostalgic. You must go sometime. The seafood dumplings are only a glimpse of what Dalian has to offer - they’ve figured out the best of grain and sea in my opinion.
Oh funny, I had no idea! Yeah, I'd love to go, generally want to visit some more parts of the country. Tbh I'm sure that Xi Home covers more of the proper Liaoning food, but the menu structure means it gets a bit lost amongst all the stuff from the rest of the country.
The original restaurant near the strand was my fav for their dong bei food!! We actually ate there on NYE one year I loved it so much. Their stir fried green beans and northern style sweet and sour was really legit. It’s sad to hear they might have gotten more westernised.
Oh really? Yeah, I wonder how different the two menus are. Even this one, I would say it's sort of half-westernised, half just too broad (though the sausage and bacon breakfast pancake is pretty firmly on the 'westernised' side of that). As very much not an expert, I would have loved if that sense of the specific northern/northeastern/Liaoning stuff just came through stronger!
